Quick Summary: On April 20, 1999 the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) announced that it now recognizes the Community Health Accreditation Program, Inc. (CHAP) as a national accreditation organization for hospices that request participation in the Medicare program.
This announcement takes effect April 20, 1999 and will remain in effect through November 20, 2003, HCFA said.
According to HCFA, accreditation of a hospice by CHAP demonstrates that all Medicare hospice conditions of participation are being met or exceeded.
HCFA has also received an application from the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for recognition as a national accreditation organization for hospices. However, at this time HCFA says that it is still processing JCAHOs application, and that it will issue its decision concerning JCAHO at a later date.
